From Bach to Bachianas: Songs Without Words
LEGENDARY MUSICIANS YEHUDA HANANI AND ELIOT FISK PERFORM A CORNUCOPIA OF EXQUISITE SONGS ARRANGED FOR CELLO AND PIANO
This recording is about song — a cornucopia of exquisite jewels from a multitude of cultures: Spanish, Italian, German, Brazilian, Cuban, Jewish, Russian, Romanian-Gypsy, and the American heartland. Like the miniaturized trees of bonsai, it is a universe in a nutshell, reduction to the very essentials. Arranged by cellist Yehuda Hanani and guitarist Eliot Fisk, the songs have a sense of adventure and rediscovery that accompanies such work and offer listeners a way to experience this music in new and wonderful ways. Both Hanani and Fisk are internationally known artists, performing worldwide across the globe. This entire recording is suffused with their deep friendship and shared artistic legacy.

SCHOENFIELD: Refractions
6 British Folk Songs / Peccadilloes
James Tocco, piano
Hanani, Yehuda, cello
Alexander Fiterstein, clarinet
Paul Schoenfield, piano
Paul Schoenfield’s music attracts listeners with its combination of exuberance and seriousness, familiarity and originality, lightness and depth, often with sly twists. Six British Folk Songs was written in 1985 as a tribute to the cellist Jacqueline du Pré. Each of the six Peccadilloes is based on a particular ‘bad taste’ motif, which the composer invites us to enjoy with ‘the same sort of guilt and pleasure that accompany one while eating a large chocolate sundae’. Refractions, a wonderful addition to the chamber repertoire, is based on music from Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro and was commissioned by Close Encounters With Music in memory of Mozart enthusiast and physicist Rollin Hotchkiss, who helped lay the groundwork for the field of molecular genetics.

PERRY: Jamestown Concerto /
SCHUMAN: A Song of Orpheus /
THOMSON: Cello Concerto (Hanani)
Hanani, Yehuda, cello
Ireland RTE National Symphony Orchestra
Eddins, William, Conductor
This recording presents three important yet infrequently heard American cello works. It is the first modern recording of William Schuman’s A Song of Orpheus; the Virgil Thomson Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra in its original full orchestration has not been recorded since the 1950s; and William Perry’s Jamestown Concerto
is receiving its world première recording. All three composers worked extensively in art song, opera or musical theatre, and their concertos, while technically demanding, emphasize the lyric qualities of the cello, the instrument that most closely identifies with the human voice. The music is distinctly American, optimistic and outgoing, while intentionally touching on the roots of the American experience.
