SUMMARY:“Endings” – Piano Trios by Shostakovich and Schubert
DESCRIPTION:How to end and exit a musical composition—with a bang or a whimper? Will there be the thunderous affirmation of a Beethoven symphony or a whispered adieu à la Mahler’s Song of the Earth\, sailing into eternity? A cliffhanger ending leaves the audience on the edge of their seats while a full-circle ending bringing us back to the beginning satisfies human desire for resolution and completeness. Ambiguous endings can evoke many different emotional responses while the happy ending is a classic\, satisfying viewers and listeners as they wrap up their experience. Compositional choices will be illuminated by Shostakovich’s haunting\, riveting Trio No. 2 and Schubert’s heavenly last work\, the Trio No. 2 in E-flat major (the main theme of the slow movement was borrowed from a Swedish song\, “The sun has set”)\, as he turns death and personal tragedy into a triumph—his own personal ending of choice. \nGila Goldstein\, piano; Xiao-Dong Wang\, violin; Yehuda Hanani\, cello \n \n  \n  \n  \nIndividual Tickets: Orchestra/Mezzanine: $60 \nSeason Subscriptions \n\nEarly Bird Subscription Deadline: September 28\nEarly Bird Subscribers will receive their e-tickets by October 3\nRegular Season Subscribers will receive their e-tickets on October 24\n\nVirtual Tickets: \n$30 for each concert; $100 for access to complete season. SUMMARY:6 Unaccompanied Bach Suites for Cello with Colin Carr & Yehuda Hanani
DESCRIPTION:THIS PERFORMANCE IS SOLD OUT. \nTwo leading Bach interpreters embark on a journey while traversing his Six Suites\, the apogee of the cello repertoire. Filled with mystery and beauty\, blasted through with rapture\, every note is a bold statement. Music that first flowed from the composer’s quill in the early 1700’s\, it belongs to no specific time or place. At the same time as it floats in the heavenly spheres\, it provides plenty of earthly pleasures – courtly music\, riffs\, Celtic jigs\, the merriment of a tavern musician\, and glimpses of modern minimalism. The title “Unaccompanied” is a bit of a misnomer: a single cellist takes on numerous voices\, making the music drama for three or four characters played by the actor! If angels danced\, this is the music that would no doubt accompany them on their gramophone. \nColin Carr\, cello; Yehuda Hanani\, cello \n\n“…Colin Carr—supreme technique and ebullience” –Boston Musical Intelligencer \n“In this era of the cello\, Hanani is among the best. His Bach was absorbing\,  \nimaginative\, beautiful in all respects.” –San Francisco Examiner

SUMMARY:The Art of the String Quartet — The Avalon
DESCRIPTION:The notable Avalon String Quartet returns with another Berkshire premiere\, “For Such a Time as This\,” a retelling of the biblical Esther story for string quartet and vocalist\, from a feminist perspective. Composer Stacy Garrop’s (recent commissions from the Pittsburgh\, St. Louis and Louisiana symphony orchestras) intent is to remind us “we each possess agency to make changes happen in our lives\, to act upon injustices\, and leave the world a better place.” Mendelssohn’s Quartet No. 2 pulsates with young love before landing in fairyland with a shimmering scherzo right out of Midsummer Night’s Dream. Puccini’s verismo-style “Chrysanthemums\,” a seldom-performed gem\, begins the concert. \nJulia Bentley\, narrator/mezzo-soprano\, Avalon String Quartet: Blaise Magniere\, violin; Marie Wang\, violin; Anthony Devroye\, viola; Cheng-Hou Lee\, cello. \n“The Avalon—drop-dead gorgeous playing” – Classics Today \nAfterglow Reception in Saint James Place’s Great Hall following the concert in the Sanctuary Space. SUMMARY:Town & Country—Mendelssohn and Dvorak
DESCRIPTION:Glittering cosmopolitan Berlin and the village of Nelahozeves\, Bohemia (now Czech Republic\, population 2\,200) are the respective places of origin of Felix Mendelssohn and Antonin Dvorak. Mendelssohn’s Trio in C minor offers some of his most exquisitely crafted music\, with a magical scherzo right out of Midsummer Night’s Dream. The spirit of Slavic folk music is at the heart of the “Dumky” Trio\, opus 90—showcasing Dvorak’s gifts of melody and inventiveness. The suave salon vs. fireside village dance; city lights and rural utopia\, if you will. \nRenana Gutman\, piano; Xiao-Dong Wang\, violin; Yehuda Hanani\, cello \nMasks are strongly recommended but not required. \n \n\n\n\n\n  \nVirtual Ticket: Link will be sent one week after concert.
